In our Facebook community, we host a monthly book club. In June we read Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. Here’s my review of this book.
Book Review: Before We Were Yours
Before We Were Yours starts out with a heartbreaking opening dedication and keeps tugging at your heartstrings throughout. The book is so well written that I struggled to put it down. The story is about children who are ripped from their homes through either kidnapping or lies.
The book is written from the viewpoint of two different characters. Avery, the politician’s daughter, who cares more about doing the right thing to make her family look good than her own heart. And Rill, a young girl, ripped from her home along with her siblings while her parents are at the hospital delivering a new baby.
Through these two storylines, we read of unthinkable horrors, a spirit of curiosity, a heart of love, and uncertain futures.
Lisa Wingate does an amazing job of weaving these two stories together in a way that leaves you both hopeful and heartbroken.
This book is a must-read but be sure and grab your tissues. From cover to cover, I was drawn in by the phenomenal writing, the heartbreaking story and the hope of what was to come.
If this book is not on your reading list, add it now. This book is so well written and not to be missed.
From our book club members
I LOVED the book and the book club. I have not made time to read in years and this was just the motivation I needed.
