In our Facebook community, we host a monthly book club. In September we read The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy. Here’s my review of this book.
Book Review: The Perfect Mother
Disturbing. Confusing. If I had to just pick two words to describe this book those would be what I would say.
The story is about Winnie and the May Mothers group. In the book, Winnie joins a mother’s group that she finds online.
Through this group, we meet a group of women and one man who all have children born in the same month. The May mothers decide to go out for a night on the town and then one of the babies is abducted.
A little bit mystery mixed with a whole lot of drama. You never quite know what’s going on until the end of the story.
The book had its great moments but it also left me feeling lost and confused half the time. The confusing part of this book is in the writing. The story flips back and forth between viewpoints. We see the story from different viewpoints of the May mothers. It was often confusing knowing who was talking.
I’m usually very good at following along with a story but I kept getting the characters in the story mixed up. I had to look back numerous times and see who was talking or what was going on.
The ending of the book was disturbing. I will say though – keep reading. Battle through the tough parts and finish reading the book. Some of the confusion in the storytelling makes sense in the end and the story wraps up nicely.
