A girl takes over her twin sister’s identity in this emotionally charged page-turner about the complicated bond between sisters. Read my review of The Secrets We Keep by Trisha Leaver.
Book Review: The Secrets We Keep
In theory, this sounds like the kind of book you’d want to read. In actuality, it’s not. The premise of this book is pretty ridiculous.
Ella and Maddy are twins but the only way they are alike is in their looks. The two girls are in a terrible car accident where Maddy is tragically killed.
When Ella wakes up she tells everyone that she is her sister. It’s absurd to think that you could just be someone else and no one would notice. But it’s especially noticeable in these two girls who are so distinctly different.
Maybe in their grieving her parents and friends wanted it to be true but then it still means losing the other girl. As a parent, it’s an impossible situation to even consider.
Ella becomes Maddy but quickly finds out that her sister is not who she thought she was. The secrets she bears makes pretending to be her sister even harder.
The book wasn’t terribly written and I loved the other characters. I especially liked Josh and Alex in the story. But I was so stuck on the fact that this book was dumb that I had a hard time enjoying anything in the book.
Overall, I’d say the book isn’t the worst that I’ve read. The characters were mostly likable, although at times stupid. The pace was quick and the ending was good. I would have liked a bit more of a wrap up for the secondary characters.
